Acne Myths, Skincare Routine and how to De-Stress

If you have ever been told that "poor hygiene" contributes to the formulation of acne, then raise your hand....

This is actually an incorrect MYTH! Having dirty skin has no correlation with acne, as most of the biological reactions occur beneath the skin, not on the surface, meaning the cleanliness of your skin has no effect on whether you attract acne or not.

What is acne?

Acne is simply a skin condition where the hair follicles get trapped with nasty oil and dead skin cells, therefore creating pimples/ zits.

Hormones and how they affect acne

A type of hormone called androgen is an acne factor. When there is a rise in androgen levels (usually when adolescence begins), it causes the oil glands under the skin to grow.

Yes, this is in fact, a myth. Acne isn't caused by dirty skin, although there is a lot of speculation around hygiene being a factor in bad skin, it's untrue.

Diet myth

The connection between greasy foods and acne is most commonly considered a myth by most of the experts in the industry. It's almost a placebo effect, or even a personal feeling as digesting greasy foods can often make you feel gross and sluggish due to the certain chemicals used, however, working with greasy foods actually can clog your pores if the grease sticks to the skin.

While greasy food doesn't have an affect on acne, certain products such as skim-milk and carbohydrate rich foods like bread and rice can worsen acne. Everything is okay in moderation but if you're anything like me, fuelling your body with the right foods that make you feel great, will have you glowing inside and out, after all, you are what you eat.
