We know first hand how heartbreaking it can be to watch your child suffer from eczema, which is why we’ve developed a range of natural products to nourish, hydrate and protect your child’s skin.
What is eczema?
Eczema is an inherited, chronic itchy skin condition that usually appears in early childhood. Similarly to adults, the severity of eczema in children can vary, ranging from very mild to severe (otherwise known as atopic dermatitis).
What does it look like?
It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish eczema from other rashes or skin reactions. Some telltale signs to look for are patches of skin that become red, dry, scaly and itchy, and in some cases it may weep. In more severe cases, blisters will appear which can weep and become infected. In young babies, eczema is most prominent on the cheeks, forehead, and scalp.
What causes it?
Eczema is caused by a person's inability to repair damage to the skin barrier due to a mutation in the gene called filaggrin. Filaggrin is important for formation of the skin barrier, and those susceptible to eczema have only one copy of this gene, instead of two. For people with this gene deformation, certain triggers can cause a reaction to the skin which may differ from person to person.
How can I help my baby’s skin?
Approximately 1 in 5 babies have eczema, and 1 in 3 experience dry skin. For babies and children with eczema, the skin barrier does not work as well. Their skin has less water retaining properties, so moisture is easily lost from the skin which causes it to dry out more easily. To help your child’s skin, it’s important to hydrate and protect the skin. Ensure you treat any inflammation or infection immediately if they occur.
If you think your child has eczema, consult your doctor as professional medical advice may be required.
There are a whole range of products that have been developed to treat eczema in children, however many of these contain chemicals that can further irritate the skin. We always recommend a natural product that will nourish the skin while treating their eczema.
The Grahams Natural Baby Body & Bath Oil is a naturally formulated, clinically proven formula, specially developed to treat eczema in children. It contains absolutely no water, which provides an effective barrier and offers essential hydration for their delicate skin. Our Baby Body and Bath Oil is enriched with natural ingredients that are clinically proven such as Colloidal Oatmeal, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and Coco Butter which is used to relieve minor skin irritations and itching due to eczema.
We recommend using a combination of the Baby Body and Bath Oil and Baby Eczema Cream.
Baby Body & Bath Oil
The Baby Body & Bath Oil should be used daily, either in a bath or directly applied to the skin. This will help to hydrate the skin and act as a barrier to protect the skin. We suggest bathing in the oil for 10-15 minutes in tepid water. Soaking the skin is beneficial for opening the pores and allowing the oil to penetrate deeper into the skin. Once out of the bath, do not rub the oil off, but instead pat the skin dry and massage the excess oil back into the skin. You can even add more oil topically if you require additional hydration.
Baby Eczema Cream
Our Baby Eczema Cream works in three ways:
- Anti-inflammatory - calms and reduces inflammation with powerful anti-inflammatory herbs
- Antibacterial - Naturally active colloidal oatmeal helps to control bacteria on the skin
- Moisturising ingredients that hydrate dry and irritated skin for up to 6 hours
Wrapping the skin
Another trick that works for many eczema sufferers is to wrap the skin at night. After bathing your child in the Baby Body & Bath Oil, and applying the Baby Eczema Cream, you can wrap the affected area in glad wrap. Secure the glad wrap with a first aid (crepe) bandage. This allows the skin to heal during the night, while reducing the urge to itch as the area is protected and covered.
We do not recommend wet wrapping as water can be irritating on the skin. We’ve also found that a wet bandage dries out quickly and can get stuck to the skin, which is painful to remove. Using glad wrap alleviates these issues as it does not stick to the skin and is easily removed.
Is this regime only for babies?
We get asked this a lot, and the answer is no! It is for 0+ months, so even your toddler or tween can use this cream and oil combination.
