What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Leaky gut occurs when the tight junctions between the cells that line your small intestine loosen, creating holes in which is commonly known as ‘leaky gut’. This then allows undigested food particles, bacteria, toxins and antigens into your bloodstream and can cause an immune system reaction.
What Causes Leaky Gut?
The exact cause of a leaky gut is a bit of a mystery. However, it’s believed the following reasons may cause an increase in intestinal permeability.
- High gluten consumption
- Infections like candida, intestinal parasites, and small intestine bacterial overgrowth
- Excess consumption of inflammatory foods

An immune response from your immune system which normally serves the purpose of fighting infections and diseases, is now fighting your own cells leading to chronic inflammation, which is a root cause of major diseases including eczema. Studies have shown many people with eczema have different bacteria in their gut compared to people without eczema. This doesn’t mean every eczema is caused by leaky gut syndrome. However, an unhealthy gut means a weak immune system and thereby contact with even a small trigger, such as stress, extreme temperatures, or allergens, may make you more susceptible to eczema flare ups. Healthy foods include:

Here’s a quick, easy and delicious way to include Mega Oil in your morning smoothie.
Healthy Green Smoothie
- ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
- ½ cup honey yoghurt
- 3 cups baby spinach
- 2 bananas (sliced and frozen)
- 1 tablespoon of mega oil
- Power up your morning with this fruit-veggie smoothie. Prepare the banana by slicing and placing it in a freezer bag. Freeze the banana overnight.
- In a blender, combine the almond milk, honey yoghurt, baby spinach and frozen banana and blend until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into a tall glass.
- Now the fun part! Stir in the Mega Oil until smooth and ENJOY!
